Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer

J. Sebastian founded Van Berkom and Associates Inc. (“VBA”) in 1991 and is Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer. He is also Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer and Responsible Officer (“RO”) of Van Berkom Golden Dragon Limited (“VBGD”) in Hong Kong that was incorporated on February 22, 2012.

In his roles, J. Sebastian ensures that the investment philosophy, process and disciplines at VBA and VBGD are properly implemented, resourced and incented.

His investment career commenced in 1971 at the Bell Canada Pension Fund. In 1979, he became a Partner of LRM Investment Management, and in 1984 co-founded Montrusco Bolton Investments Inc.

He has won the Small-Cap Manager of the Year Award in 1997 and was a Finalist at the Annual Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards in 1998. In 2003, he funded the Van Berkom Endowed Chair in Small-Cap Equities at the John Molson School of Business (“JMSB”) at Concordia University (“Concordia”) in Montreal. In 2005, he became a Founding Director of the Institute for Governance of Private and Public Organizations in Canada (“IGOPP”), and on August 29, 2010, he was appointed to the Audit and Investment Committees. In December 2013, he was appointed President of the Investment Committee. In 2011, he funded the Van Berkom JMSB Small-Cap Case Competition at Concordia. On February 19, 2013, J. Sebastian was appointed to the Investment Committee of the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation. On November 28, 2014, J. Sebastian founded the Van Berkom Small-Cap Investment Management Program (“VBIMP”) at the JMSB at Concordia. Since September 16, 2015, the Stephen A. Jarislowsky Fellowship was established under the VBIMP at the JMSB at Concordia. On June 6, 2017 J. Sebastian received an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree (honoris causa) from Concordia University.

Investment Team

Benoît joined VBA in 1999 and is Partner, Vice-President, Senior Portfolio Manager, Canadian Small-Cap Equities. At VBA, Benoît is the leader of the Canadian small-cap portfolio team, with responsibility for all the investment decisions related to this product and for the management of the Canadian Equity Team. He is also involved in the marketing, servicing and administration of the firm.

He commenced his career in finance at The Royal Trust Company in 1983. In 1984, he joined Credit Foncier Trust in the Treasury Department. In 1986, he became Portfolio Manager, Canadian Equities at Gentrust Investment Counsellors Inc.

In 1993, Natcan Investment Management Inc. purchased Gentrust and Benoît was appointed Assistant Vice-President, Canadian Equities. In 1995, he was promoted to Vice-President, Canadian Equities, responsible for all Canadian small-cap equity investments.

Benoît is a member of the Cercle finance et placement du Québec and the CFA Montreal Association. In January 2016, he received the designation as a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors (“ICD.D”). He is also the former President of the Board of Directors of Collège Notre-Dame in Montreal.

Benoît is a member of the Executive Management Committee, a member of the Board of Directors and a significant shareholder of VBA.

Mathieu is Partner, Vice-President, Senior Portfolio Manager, U.S. Small-Cap Equities. Mathieu has been with VBA’s U.S. Small-Cap Equity Team since joining the company in 2000. In 2007, Mathieu was promoted to Senior Portfolio Manager and became responsible for all the investment decisions related to this product and for the management of the U.S. Equity Team. He is also responsible for conducting research on a broad spectrum of the U.S. small-cap equity market. Mathieu is a member of the Executive Management Committee, a member of the Board of Directors and a significant shareholder of VBA.

Lawrence is Director, Managing Partner, Senior Portfolio Manager, Asia Small-Cap Equities at Van Berkom Golden Dragon Limited in Hong Kong (“VBGD”). He is responsible for developing and organizing the business plan for this operation, as well as responsible for all the investment decisions related to this product and for the management of the Asia Equity Team. He is also responsible for conducting fundamental research on a broad spectrum of the Asia small-cap equity market. Lawrence has worked for VBA’s U.S. and Canadian Small-Cap Equity Divisions since joining the firm in 2004. Prior to that, Lawrence worked for the EAFE equity team at Jarislowsky, Fraser Limited in Montreal.

Dennis is Director, Van Berkom Golden Dragon Limited (“VBGD”) and is a graduate of the John Molson School of Business (“JMSB”) at Concordia University and holds a Graduate Diploma in Public Accountancy from McGill University. He is a member of the Singapore Institute of Directors. He is a Director, Senior Vice-President, and Treasurer of Concordia University Hong Kong Foundation Limited; a member, past Vice-Chairman and past Governor of the Canadian International School of Hong Kong; and a past Chairman of the Chinese-Canadian Association of Hong Kong Limited.

He is the Director and Chief Executive Officer of Standard Corporate Advisory Limited and Director and Independent Non-Executive Director of various listed and private companies in Hong Kong and overseas countries. Prior to this, Dennis had been Director and Chief Financial Officer of various listed companies in Hong Kong, Singapore and the U.S. Dennis has acquired a breadth of more than 40 years of experience in the areas of public accountancy, management and tax consultancy, manufacturing, real estate and construction, distribution, retail, telecommunications, logistics, education, information technology and financial services industries.

Simon joined VBA on March 1, 2012 as Vice-President, Business Development, Compliance and Operations. He also became a member of the Executive Management Committee in March 2012. He became a Partner of VBA in March 2013 and was officially appointed Chief Compliance Officer (“CCO”) on April 1, 2015. In March 2016, Simon became a shareholder of Van Berkom Golden Dragon Limited (“VBGD”) in Hong Kong.

Prior to joining VBA, Simon served as Senior Vice-President, Head of Institutional Equity for Laurentian Bank Securities (2006-2012). Previously, he served as Vice-President and Director of Sprott Securities Inc. in Montreal (1994-2006).

Owen is Partner, Lead Portfolio Manager, U.S. Enhanced Small-Cap Equities and was promoted to this position effective in early 2017.  In January 2014, Owen was promoted to Portfolio Manager, U.S. Small-Cap Equities.  He is responsible for all investment decisions related to this new product, as well as the management of the U.S. Enhanced Small-Cap Equity Team including the marketing and servicing of this product.  He is also responsible for conducting research on a broad spectrum of the U.S. small-cap and mid-cap equity markets.

Prior to joining VBA in 2009, Owen worked over a 10-year period as a buy-side and sell-side Investment Analyst for Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Asset Management and, most recently, as Vice-President, Global Equities at Natcan Investment Management Inc.

Charles joined VBA in 2007 and is Partner, Senior Analyst, Canadian Small-Cap Equities.  He is responsible for conducting fundamental research on specific sectors of the Canadian equity market.

Previously, Charles worked for Optimum Asset Management Inc. as Portfolio Administrator (1999-2000), as Analyst and Trader, Canadian Equities (2000-2006) before becoming Financial Analyst, Canadian Equities.

Ammar is Partner, Senior Analyst, U.S. Small-Cap Equities. He is responsible for conducting fundamental research on a broad spectrum of U.S. small-cap stocks.

Prior to joining VBA in 2009, Ammar worked as an Equity Analyst at Montrusco Bolton Investments Inc. in Montreal (2007-2009). He has also worked in the Investment Banking (2005-2007) and Credit Rating industries (2004-2005).

Gabriel is Partner, Senior Analyst, Canadian Small-Cap Equities. He is responsible for conducting fundamental research on a broad spectrum of the Canadian small-cap market.

Prior to joining VBA in 2011, Gabriel was an Analyst, Canadian Equities at the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (“CMHC”) Investments and Pension Fund Division (2008-2011). Prior to CMHC, he was a Senior Associate at Deloitte’s Assurance & Advisory Practice in Ottawa (2005-2008).

Gabriel holds a Bachelor of Commerce (summa cum laude) from the Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa.  He is a Chartered Accountant (2008) and CFA Charterholder (2009).

Gabriel is a member of the Board of Directors of the Cercle de finance et placement du Québec.

In 2014 and 2015, he was the recipient of the Brendan Wood International Top Gun award.

Zhuo joined VBA in 2012 as Partner, Senior Analyst, Asia Small-Cap Equities for Van Berkom Golden Dragon Limited (“VBGD”) in Hong Kong.  In January 2017, he was promoted to Partner, Senior Analyst, U.S. Enhanced Small-Cap Equities where he is responsible for conducting fundamental research on U.S. small-cap and mid-cap stocks.

Prior to joining VBA, Zhuo worked at Rothschild & Sons Canada Ltée (2010-2012) in M&A/Restructuring Advisory.

 

Marcus joined VBGD in January 2015 and is Partner, Senior Analyst, Asia Small-Cap Equities. He is responsible for conducting fundamental research on a broad spectrum of the Asia small-cap equity market.

Prior to joining VBGD, Marcus worked at Sheng Yuan Asset Management (2011-2015) and Enlighten Asset Management (”EAM”) (2010) as an equity analyst and in investment banking. Prior to EAM, he was a tutor of Macroeconomic and International Finance at the University of Adelaide, Australia (2008-2010).

Alexandre joined VBA in May 2014 as a Research Intern. Effective May 2015, he was promoted to Analyst, U.S. and Canadian Small-Cap Equities. He is responsible for conducting fundamental research on a broad spectrum of the U.S. and Canadian small-cap equity markets. Prior to joining VBA, Alexandre worked at CIBC World Markets as a Junior Research Associate. He is also a graduate of the John Molson School of Business (“JMSB”) at Concordia University, where he is a Calvin Potter Fellow.

Julien joined VBA in May 2015 as a Research Intern. Effective July 2016, he was promoted to Research Analyst, U.S. and Canadian Small-Cap Equities.  He is responsible for conducting fundamental research on a broad spectrum of the U.S. and Canadian small-cap equity markets.

Julien holds a Master of Science (“M.Sc.”) in Finance from the HEC Montréal School of Management at the University of Montréal.

Julien is a CFA level 3 Candidate.

Prior to joining VBA, he was an Analyst for the “Standard Life – HEC Montréal” student investment fund (2014-2015).

Rhonda joined VBA in 1994 as Research Analyst and Trader. She is primarily responsible for all Canadian small-cap equity trading, monitoring spin-offs, insider buying/selling, short positions, technical analysis and sector/macro trends.

Prior to joining VBA, Rhonda worked at Beutel Goodman & Company in Toronto as Pension Administrator (1988-1992).

Judy joined VBA in January 1995. In 1999, she was appointed Research Analyst and Trader, U.S. Small-Cap Equities. She is primarily responsible for all U.S. small-cap equity trading, monitoring spin-offs, insider buying/selling, short positions, technical analysis and sector/macro trends.

Prior to joining VBA, Judy has been working in the investment management industry since 1990, having worked at Jarislowsky, Fraser Limited and Toronto Dominion Bank.


Portfolio Administration Team

Pamela is Manager, Portfolio Administration. She is in charge of the supervision and leadership of the portfolio administration team that services the Canadian, U.S. and Asia small-cap equity operations. Her responsibilities include portfolio accounting, valuations, performance measurement reporting and GIPS Compliance.

Pamela joined VBA in 2002 as Portfolio Administrator, Canadian Small-Cap Equities and was promoted to Manager, Portfolio Administration in January 2010. Prior to joining VBA, Pamela worked as Portfolio Administrator at TD Asset Management Inc. – Private Asset Management (1989-2002). Previously, she worked at Calvin Bullock Ltd. (1983-1989).

Pamela obtained her Canadian Securities Course Certificate (1997) and has completed the Canadian Investment Funds Operations Course in February 2006.

Lino joined VBA in March 2008 as Portfolio Administrator Trainee and was promoted to Portfolio Administrator in September 2009, he was promoted to Senior Portfolio Administrator effective January 1, 2014. His responsibilities include portfolio accounting, valuations and performance measurement reporting.

Previously, Lino worked at Computershare Trust Co. as Accounting Administrator (2004-2007). He has completed the Management Certificate Program at McGill University, as well as the Canadian Securities Course and the CGA Accounting Program.


Office Management Team

Louis-Philippe is a member of the Quebec Bar and joined VBA in April 2017 as Legal Compliance Officer. He is responsible for maintaining compliance manuals subject to the Autorité des marchés financiers, Québec (“AMF”), the Securities and Exchange Commission in the U.S. (“SEC”), and the Securities and Futures Commission in Hong Kong (“SFC”). He is responsible for maintaining compliance policies and procedures and undertaking the necessary tests to ensure VBA’s compliance with regulatory agencies.

Prior to joining VBA, Louis-Philippe was General Manager, Corporate Trust Services with Computershare Trust Company of Canada (2014-2016), where he also served as Manager, Corporate Trust Services (2010-2014) and Corporate Trust Officer (2001-2010). Prior to 2001, he was a lawyer with the legal firm Bouchart d’Orval Cadrin S.E.N.C. (2000-2001).

Kim joined VBA in September 2013 as Manager, Accounting and Administration. She is responsible for the production of financial statements, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll and human resources. She also executes certain administrative tasks.

Prior to joining VBA, Kim worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers (“PWC”) as Accounting Technician (1999-2003). From (2003-2005), she worked at Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton and from (2005-2007) she worked at SNC Lavalin as an Accountant, Investment Division. From 2007-2013, she returned to PWC as Senior Associate. Kim obtained her CGA in 2010.

Wendy joined VBA on May 18, 1995 as Secretary. Effective January 1, 2000, Wendy was appointed Administrative Assistant, Canadian Small-Cap Equities and was promoted to Senior Administrative Assistant, Canadian Small-Cap Equities in July 2010. Effective January 2016, Wendy was promoted to Executive Administrative Assistant. She is responsible for administrative support functions for the Canadian and Asia Small-Cap operations.

Danielle joined VBA on June 14, 1999 as Administrative Assistant, U.S. Small-Cap Equities and was promoted to Executive Administrative Assistant, U.S. Small-Cap Equities, in July 2010. She is responsible for administrative support functions for the U.S. Small-Cap Equity Division.

Prior to joining VBA, Danielle worked as an Administrative Assistant in various Federal Government Departments in Ottawa (1984-1988). Subsequently, she worked as Senior Staff Assistant at the World Bank, Washington, D.C. (1988-1993). Later she returned to the Federal Government of Canada as Administrative Assistant (1994-1999).

Claudie joined VBA on July 25, 2016 as Administrative Assistant, Receptionist Trainee before obtaining a permanent position in December 2016. She works closely with several departments to provide support to the teams, while ensuring the greeting of our clients and visitors. Claudie is currently enrolled in the Canadian Securities Course (“CSC”) in order to increase her knowledge in the field.

Prior to joining VBA, Claudie studied Tourism Management and worked for seven years in the hospitality industry, where she was able to prove her skills by moving up the ladder.
